The 2013 Ojibwe provided way more fun than past events. With the return of the National Series Ojib again got the "big boys" back for this running.
The fun actually started on Tuesday with an all day test session from 10am to 5 pm, Attendance was a little light, and 95+ degrees with no wind and no AC in the truck made for a tough day.
Wednesday provided more of the same with Ken Block having exclusive use of the stage for 3 hours and then the masses for the last three. The masses did not disappoint, as they managed to roll a car in the stage. That rollover was pulled to the end of the stage and the stage then resumed without further incident. (footnote: the rolled car was back for the start of the rally on Friday.)
Thursday provided Recce fun and entertainment as the rather large pickup truck for crew 48 managed to get off the road at about a 40 degree angle and high center the truck. With Devons help, he and I extricated the vehicle to the disbelief of a couple of on-lookers.
Friday provided the largest part of the entertainment value of the weekend (sans the 8am knock on my room door on Sunday). Whilst sitting at the intersection of Steamboat and Spur 2, I had a rally car stop and inquire if I had a radio as there was a rally car on fire on the stage. I did, it got reported and when it was safe I was sent to the car to assist the Start Medical (Devon) with putting it out. After exhausting most of our resources we decided that "defensive" was best and that keeping it out of the trees was the best plan. The Facebook Photo was taken shortly after the gas tank breached and although impressive we were VERY thankful that the heat was short lived and the tree went out. Devon and I got to rescue Akeley fire as well as after the fire was out they managed to drop a full sized pumper tire off the road going past other vehicles on the road, so Devon and I went into action and pulled them out too.
Sunday was interesting as after the party some of the party goers of the group ended up on a boat after bar time and one awoke on the beach having "time traveled" from the boat to the beach (dry) in an apparent instant. The 8am knock was to allow for the use of the rest room and then to find the way back home. Debannering went as expected with the rather LARGE severe storm rolling in just after we got out of the woods.
Next up two BIR trips and then LSPR.... Stay safe!

The new track at BIR provided for some fun race watching during the PCA National event. When was the last time you watched a three wide pack enter 4? Now that will get your heart pumping. From a rescue standpoint between Jim and I, we were kept busy all weekend. Numerous flat tows over the three days and 5 cars that didn't go home like they arrived. The carnage included: Blown engine in 1 a nose to tail at about 4 (the nose lost, but both drove in), a driver that felt he could beat mother nature and lined up on the left drag line with a wet front straight (all four corners and about 6 spins) and lastly during the race, a racing porsche lost it at 10 came to a stop in front of victory circle sideways in the line and got t-boned by a second race porsche. Spendy crash...Watching that was a (in my best Scooby voice) Roouuut Roooowwwww.
Next up is Ojibwe. We are still looking for teams to staff that so if you are not getting those e-mails and want them let me know, but more inportant is that if you are planning on being there let me know. I am currently 2 teams short for this event.
Red Light has two remaining race events. PCA 9/20-22 and Quattro 10/5 Watch for e-mails on those and be safe out there.
With the completion of both the Slowpokes event and the BMW event RLR's activities at BIR are complete for June. Slowpokes provided a quiet day with no incidents to talk about. This makes it about the 3rd or 4th event for them that is incident free.
BMW was not as lucky. On Saturday we had a car get wide at 12, find it's way back to the track and at the same time traction. That combination coupled with the aim at the wall drivers left launched the car into the wall drivers left just past twelve. Other than ego and a nice 1990's BMW there were no other injuries. Sunday was no better with the day ending in a rollover at 11. A driver broke the rear end loose at 11 got sideways, corrected and the counterskid took the car off drivers right at 11 and sideways into the pea gravel. the pea gravel did what it's supposed to do and stopped the tires. unfortunately the top part of the car was still moving faster than that and the car ended up upside down. Again no injuries, and my complements to staff and RLR folk as the clear time was 10 minutes on that.
Look for July e-mails in a couple of weeks as those two events are rescue only events.
Well as I sit here writing in my WARM home, I can say that it is was an interesting weekend at the "revised" BIR track. Between the cold on Friday, the rain and cold on Saturday, Sunday was actually pretty tolerable with sunshine and warmer temps.
Between Friday and Saturday Rescue was kept busy with 4 cars into the walls, We had one DR just past Johnson Road, One DR between 5 and 6, One DR just past 13, and one DL brushing Victory Circle and stopping just before impact with the pit lane wall in front of Comm Tech.
Observation is that the new configuration is far faster with the PCA Race cars turning 1:53 laps on the big course. By comparison John Schaller was turning 1:38 laps in a Formula Atlantic on the long course. I am told that Gary Curtiss was saying on a Brainerd station this winter that Jed and Kristi wanted to have the fastest road course in North America and that they do. I am not going to argue that point.

It is with a heavy heart that I report the following:
Per Beryl Ann:
I am so sorry to have to share with you that Karen Freund passed away this afternoon (1/9/13). She had emergency surgery on Christmas Day to repair a perforated colon… and the complications with her weak lungs and heart were just too much for her.
I would like to extend sympathy and prayers from those of us at Red Light Rescue and the Rally Rescue folks.
A Brief Story:
A number of years ago Karen sat me down with her and she explained the issues that she had with her lungs. Her point at the time was to enlighten me as to why she wanted me to take up position at certain spots in the Ojibwe Rally when she worked Net control. She wanted medical help close by if there was an issue. She also explained that the lung condition she had was one where others with the same problems had lived far shorter lives than she.
The point of sharing this is that I have always known Karen to fight for what she thought was right and a person that would not give up. I have been honored and blessed to have known her since I met her at BIR and in the Rally world. I as many others will dearly miss her. Rest in Peace Karen.
Please offer any prayers and thoughts to Katherine and Kerry during this time. Katherine does have a facebook account and that appears at this time to be where most of the comments are going.

Just a couple of quick updates for all:
Ojib and LSPR are back on the national schedule for 2013. More as the dates get closer but look for Ojib be based out of Detroit Lakes the last week in August. LSPR is again in October but earlier this year.
It appears from the video that the 9-10-1 front straight option is no longer an option. The wall at 8 looks to extend over the asphalt, and it does not look like it is intended as a temporary change. We'll undoubtedly hear more before April.
As of this writing the '12 LSPR is in the books. There are a couple of things to remind you of.
First is that the annual Chili-off is Tommorrow (11/3) Go to the Ojib site for details.
Second is that the dates for LSPR 2013 are set (10/17-20) The cabins are reserved again, but there is a possibility that they will be apartments by then, so a plan B was called for. SO there are rooms reserved at the Copper Crown for us. Details for those rooms will be sent by e-mail. The best news is that LSPR is back to being a NATIONAL event again. That should bring back some of the bigger names in rally so this 2013 event is not one to miss.
The annual social will be again in Jan. this year, so watch for details in a few weeks.
As of this writing the PCA has finished their last event for the season and there is one more event for the Quattro club at the end of the week. After that the school has scheduled one last car event at the track before the back half of the track gets torn up for repaving this fall. for those rally types LSPR is scheduled for the end of October and the following week is the Chilli off.
