Well, the Final Fling folks decided that they would not be outdone by the last event. They started the weekend with a rollover at 8. After a quiet morning things go going in the afternoon. The rollover was a result of a driver fighting for control at 8 with the right front tire dropping off the pavement into the new track depression. the driver not knowing that he had a tire off kept trying to recover and when the tire finally returned to the asphalt, the 3-4" jump sent the car a rolling. The left front bead broke in this process so the bottom and top of the left rim pulled a couple of chunks out of the pavement. the car eventually landed on it's wheels. Picture pulling up to a car in the middle of the track between 8 and 9 with a glass debris field covering 100% of the track and about 50 feet long with the Porsche in the middle of it. Wow, what a mess.
The only other items of note were the two vehicles Friday that drivers forgot about rule number 3 - "They run better with 'go' juice in the tanks." Jim got the first one and pulled it to the pumps, and Paul took the second one to the pumps. (note to self: New corvettes really suck for front end hook points)
Saturday and Sunday were tempered by rain but the rest of the folks behaved and kept the cars off of the walls. All things considered an good weekend for NS-PCA and a great season for them.
Well the best word to describe these three events was "MAYDAY" or "ALERT". With 3 between the three events in one weekend Rescue was kept busy.
The first mayday came Saturday afternoon at the SSAC event with a car getting sideways at 8 and then barrel rolling into the trees drivers left at 8. The car ended up facing oncoming and sitting at a 45 degree angle with the drivers door pinned by the ground and the passenger door pinned by the tree. the 4 door hatch allowed for right rear entry into the passenger area where the uninjured passenger exited thru the rear hatch. This driver required a little more help exiting....
Well I finally got a breather to get caught up on news articles. First things first: Ojibwe Forests Rally.
The Ojib this year was still pretty dry, but despite this Gene did manage to find the most mud with the new Rescue 12. (no pictures yet as of this writing) so he takes the "most mud" award for this event. With CRA playing at BIR and the debannering crews already in the woods there was little to do on the way home but go visit the track. This was in contract to the rally as there was excitement both nights.
Well with things as busy as they have been here at RLR HQ, I have not gotten this off as soon as I'd have liked. But here are some of the highlights from this month.
PCA got off to a busy Friday start with Rescue One making numerous road trips for flat tows most of the day. Ryan and Jim sat for most of Friday enjoying the sun. Saturday brought about a more even distribution of work for all rescue. With the addition of Jerry we started the day with an oil down on the front straight, numerous flat tows and finished the day with a near mayday at two that included "flying" lessons for the driver. Not to mention the "spectator" in the run-off at one and the trip by Rescue one to intercept from the staging road at 10
The BIR schools wear relatively tame by comparison with little more that a couple of flat tow during the course of the events.

Just a quick story here to update on a couple of events. Headwaters went well with only one car fire to speak of. that was put out and Kerrick fire was called to verify the swamp was out. Headwaters also provided the rescue staff with Safety Sweep functions for the event and that went VERY well. I'd like to see that practice continue.
As for the Track Addix and Donnybrooke events in June, the Spec Fire in June provided some good training grounds for all involved and other than a few flat tows there was no major incidents or trips to the hospital. a very quiet month and great racing for all participants. See you in July...
What a long weekend. Nord Stern started the weekend off on Friday with the Spring Fling Drivers School. For a Nord Stern Event this one was pretty tame with only one flat tow on Saturday and one on Sunday. No other real incidents to speak of. Mike had some fun with turtles on 7/8 and the usual smattering of deer sightings late in the day between 6-9. Quattro on the other hand got a little more creative….
The short recap is that we had a car spin 13 times about 1 inch off the wall with only minor damage to the car in the morning. Then there was the "hot track" removal of the car from the gravel trap, complete with a pedestrian walking over from the base of the tower. The day ended with the car fire at 2. Burned up a spec racer that broke an oil line and sprayed oil all over the car engine and hot exhaust starting at pit out. More detail when I have more time but what a day!
Nord Stern opened the season at BIR, but some important details about BIR first.
Tim, is back in the role he had before the issue arose last season, Roger is in the role of the Facilities Manager, and Scott is Track Manager. For those staying under the RLR program there is a one time fee for leaving your camper on the track, and the nightly cost for the "track rats" is now what is has been with this mamangement team in past years. I'll e-mail the details for those interested. (just ask). There is still no staying the night in the track buildings, but that may change before the end of the season. As for the track, changes observed at this event include the removal of all but the platform debris from 2, an wider run-off area at 2-3 (it goes ALL the way to the fence now) and tire bales around the fence line from first return to Johnson street. There are now also highway car barriers from 8 to the tower drivers left and from the bridge to 10 drivers right. Access off the track is now 9A past the bridge as it has been in the past. A couple of minor tweaks and we can get access at 9 and 10 back.
We are told that the short course is waiting on EPA approval of wetland issues and that will decide the final path before that part of the improvements start. There is also a delay on the "rain bypass" while NHRA reviews the option and certifies that is a safe alternate return road. It was also observed that the needed equipment to rebuild berms was in place to accomplish that task.
So in the short haul the improvements are much needed and welcome and it looks like the new owers are really serious about making the a "class" facility. A real breath of fresh air over past management and certain staff members.
Are you ready for the season to start? Time certainly went fast this winter. The racing season is already in swing for a couple of groups and for Red Light it starts at the end of this month. The e-mail for workers is going out on the 8th so look for that. The details for the meeting/social event are included in there. There is a lot to talk about this month. So I'll get right into it. The March meeting, as you can tell, is not going to happen. Per the polls on the site there was an opinion that there should be a meeting but that there were no issues that needed discussion in a "formal" setting. SO, the informal meeting is planned for Saturday the 21st of April. This is a DATE CHANGE from the last scheduled date as I somehow managed to have to work on the 14th. Location is at the Ahles Residence as is the normal end of season meeting. Details will follow in a different e-mail but it's pretty much the same drill on a different night. As for the racing side of things there is a lot going on this year. If you have NOT voted in the polls please go vote. I am making choices base on the results of thes polls.
